Pensacola, FL
Young parents of children Jacob (5) and Samantha (3), Steve and Jo Young of Pensacola, FL, recently visited a VBS event at "Green Oaks Baptist". "Everything appeared to be in order", Steve said. "That is, until we entered the sanctuary. I've never seen so many hands lifted in the air moving about, and bodies gyrating. Not in a Baptist church anyhow. I guess it threw me off a bit. My initial reaction, after looking around a bit, was to walk outside and double check the sign to make sure we were in the right place. We were indeed at the right place, "Green Oaks Baptist" right on the doors, but I've never seen so many hands enthusiastically risen into the air in song. I want to say there was dancing, but I don't want to get anyone in trouble. Given my familiarity and expectations, I thought I was walking into a Pentecostal revival meeting."
Reportedly Steve asked some of the VBS volunteers about this, and was directed to speak with an elder named Nathan, who was there in attendance. Understandably confused, Steve asked for further confirmation from Nathan about the church's official association. He was told, in short, this was just the way they try to get the kids involved in worshiping God. I talked to Nathan for a direct quote, to get confirmation and explanation of what the Youngs witnessed on their visit. Nathan chuckled a little and explained, "VBS is a once-a-year event for the kids. We really want to get them interested in what it is like to worship God. But, they are just kids. We try to bring it down to their level, and at their age, that means raising your hands in worship, and very modest dance. Kids like to flap their arms in the air and run around--you've probably noticed. They are rambunctious, you know. They are just kids, and we want to encourage them where they are at. We expect they will grow out of it by the time they are fully-grown adults".
