Iowa Transgender Baker Refuses To Bake Gender Reveal Birthday Cake--Sues Soon-To-Be Parents For Making The Request
Atlantic, Iowa
Kim Smith, Owner and Operator/Baker at Trans-Atlantic Bakery, in Atlantic, IA, has refused to bake a gender-reveal birthday cake for James and Amanda Hodgkin. The baby (whose gender [in the traditional sense] is supposed to be a surprise) is due to arrive in early August, and the Hodgkins have done as many others before them in wanting a cake baked to reveal the gender of their child. Typically when people do this it is a pink cake for a girl, or a blue cake for a boy. However, Kim Smith isn't having it. In fact, they are suing the Hodgkin couple for emotional distress and what they (Kim Smith) calls a hate crime against them, as well as against the unborn child.
"This is a two-fold issue for us", Kim told us, "These cisgender, binary bigots have the audacity to come into my bakery to make me bake this for them--it's appalling. We don't have to take it--no, we don't have to bake it! Besides the fact, someone has to stand up for the unborn child who they are clearly prepared to assault with their gender assuming bias before it even had a chance to breath, let alone declare its pronouns. What they have done in requesting we make this cake is sick. This child hasn't even had the time to even know what it is and already they are demanding what its sexuality should look like. This is the true definition of a hate crime, and sexual assault--both against me, and the child. They won't get away with it. Maybe they should visit Planned Parenthood to take care of it now before becoming something they are clearly not prepared for. You know what I mean."
We spoke to Mr. Hodgkin (James) about it, to get his take. He told us, "Well, you know, like many others, we found out on ultrasound that genitals were able to be seen. We were--or are--pretty excited and we just thought this was what people did nowadays. We didn't know about Kim's views on it. It's our first kid, and we wanted to go a little fancy with a professionally made cake. It's a relatively new thing really--the gender reveal cake baking. It seemed to be the up-and-coming thing to do. We didn't realize that there was this other new thing against this new and now older thing though. I guess it's kind of taboo. We meant no offense. I still think it's kind of ridiculous though. They could have just said no and explained why. As far as we knew, there were only two kinds."
Because this is classified as a hate-crime, if the lawsuit against the Hodgkin couple is won, it will result in a much larger fine as well as a minimum 2-year prison sentence. At this time, James and Amanda plan to bake their own cake at home as not to offend anyone with their cisgender bias, and are hopeful a judge will show them mercy in this case.
